India’s Manika Batra and Sathiyan Gnanasekaran won the mixed doubles title at the WTT Contender event in Budapest, Hungary. Manika and Sathiyan beat 94th ranked Hungarian pair Dora Madarasz and Nandor Ecseki 3-1 in the final.
They won the match by a scoreline of 11-9, 9-11, 12-10, 11-6.
It is a rare win for Manika and Sathiyan, who don’t often pair up with the former usually playing with veteran Sharath Kamal. Manika and Sharath have won bronze at the 2018 Asian Games and qualified for the Tokyo Olympics as well, where they fell in the first round.
The mixed doubles title is also a welcome result for Sathiyan following his first round exit at the Olympics.
Manika, meanwhile, reached the semi-finals of the women’s singles tournament. However, the 60th seed ended up losing to 18-year-old Russian paddler Elizabet Abraamian, ranked 415th in the world.
Manika beat compatriot Sreeja Akula, ranked 150, in the quarterfinals.
